Powerful Earthquake Strikes Japan, Indonesian Embassy Urges Citizens in the Land of the Rising Sun

Hargo.co.id, JAPAN – A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck central Japan on Monday (1/1) local time. The earthquake has generated tsunami waves in several areas.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate General of Indonesia in Osaka are advising Indonesian citizens (WNI) in the affected regions of the Japanese earthquake to remain vigilant as the local government has not yet lifted the tsunami warning.

“Indonesian citizens are urged to stay alert to aftershocks and tsunamis and always monitor information and instructions from local authorities,” said the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo in a statement on Monday (1/1), as quoted from Antara.

“The tsunami warning along the west coast of Japan has not been lifted until this evening Japan time,” it continued.

The reporting system of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo recorded 3,791 Indonesian citizens residing in three earthquake-affected prefectures, namely 1,315 in Ishikawa, 1,344 in Toyama, and 1,132 in Niigata.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate General in Osaka are also coordinating with local authorities and community centers to ensure the current conditions of Indonesian citizens affected by the Japanese earthquake.

“The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate General in Osaka urge Indonesian citizens to evacuate independently first,” the statement read.

Indonesian citizens affected by the earthquake can contact emergency contacts at +818035068612 (Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo) and +818031131003 (Consulate General in Osaka).

For reference, the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred on Monday at 16:10 local time (14:10 WIB) was also felt in Fukui, Nagano, Gifu, Tokyo, Yamagata, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Tottori, Iwate, Miyagi, and Akita.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama. This tsunami warning is the first since the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 that struck northeastern Japan.

So far, the earthquake has resulted in the cancellation of several Shinkansen high-speed train journeys and aircraft landings at Niigata Airport. Additionally, it has caused damage to roads in Ishikawa, power outages, and affected around 3,500 families in the three prefectures. (JawaPos.com)
