Hargo.co.id – Seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton, shocked the racing world by deciding to leave Mercedes AMG Petronas at the end of 2024.
He opted to move to Scuderia Ferrari in 2025, just five months after signing a new two-season contract with Mercedes.
Hamilton made his F1 debut in 2007 with McLaren Mercedes, winning his first title in 2008. In 2013, the British driver chose to join Mercedes AMG Petronas as Michael Schumacher’s replacement, claiming six additional championship crowns.
However, it’s undeniable that the last three seasons have been tough for Hamilton.
Not only has he endured three consecutive barren years for the world title with Mercedes, the 39-year-old driver has also faced a victory drought for the past two seasons.
Driving for Mercedes Since Age 13
This dark period is believed to have fueled Hamilton’s desire to leave the ‘Silver Arrows’ and opt for Scuderia Ferrari in 2025.
A multi-year contract was agreed with the Maranello-based squad in Italy, where he will partner with young Monacan driver, Charles Leclerc.
“I’ve had an amazing 11 years with this team [Mercedes] and am incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13. It’s where I grew up. So, leaving is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” Hamilton said via Formula1.com.
The Right Time for a New Challenge
Hamilton stated that he wants to seek a new challenge with Ferrari, which interestingly hasn’t won a world title since 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen.
He also promised Mercedes and Team Principal, Toto Wolff, to continue targeting remarkable results in their final season together.
“It’s the right time for me to take this step, and I’m excited for the new challenge. I’ll always be grateful for the incredible support from my Mercedes family, especially Toto for his friendship and leadership,” Hamilton said.
“I want to finish this season on a high with them. I’m 100% committed to delivering my best performance this season, and making my last year with the Silver Arrows a memorable one,” he concluded.(*)
